Potency of Reiki and Acupressure on Migraine Headache, Anxiety and Stress: A Study of Adult Women

Migraine headache is a severe type of problem affects women significantly more then men. Approximately nine out of ten women suffer from headache and of them four or five women suffer from migraine headache. Studies have reveled that being stimulated by psychological environmental factors, it was also observed to be a neurological disorder (Marconi et al., 2003). This disorder does not cause death but intense pain cause suffering and illness in all age of women. It can generate feeling of frustration, despair and even depression and anxiety due to loss of accomplishment of required scheduled and fear of experience of high level of stress due to intense pain. The piercing pain, suffering and illness impair the quality of life in women which results in poor quality of life, maladjustment and mental dissatisfaction (Stronks et al., 2004 & Ukestad & Wittrock, 1996). There are various range of etiology related to headache and migraine headache. The biological and neurological causes were found to be significant cause of migraine but associated psycho-physical conditions like poor posture, loud noise, eye-strain, overexertion and consistent high stress also play an important role in stimulation migraine headache. Moreover, it was also found to be associated with highly stimulants like wine, chocolate, cheese, dairy products, alcohol, tobacco and so forth (International Headache Society, 2004).

Stress and anxiety are often observed to be aversive conditions which result when person-environment interaction leads someone to perceive a painful discrepancy, real or imagined, between the demands of a situation on the one hand and their social biological resources on the other (Selye, 1950; Gerald, 1999). They are often accompanied by psycho-physical sensations such as heart palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, headache, sleep problems, muscle tension, irritability, restlessness, easily tired, tingling sensation, and so on. These conditions become more severe in person suffering from migraine. Women suffering from migraine headache experience dual stress due to suffering of headache and associated symptoms. Women most often experience mental tension that has no apparent identifiable cause due to poor life experiences, social structure and personality factors. Intense pain and suffering cause psychological feelings characterized by cognitive-emotional, behavioral, and somatic dissatisfaction that is typically associated with helplessness, apprehension or worry (Seligman et al., 2001).

Reiki and Acupressure are the alternative natural therapies which are effective in a case when they are regularly used for long time. But lacking rationalized explanations and empirical evidences they are not accepted by scientists at large. Reiki is a light touch form of bodywork therapy which heals the problem by transmitting life (positive) eneigy in the affected body part through the hands of experienced practitioner. It holds the idea that the body has seven charkas located at different glands of the body. If these charkas bear blockage of smooth flow of energy, consequently related organ or body part get troubled. The reiki provides opening of blockage in charkas resulting in smooth flow of life energy and consequently furnish peace of mind, relaxation, mental release, spiritual well-being and health (Gould & MacPherson, 2001). Acupressure is a form of another touch therapy that utilizes the principles of acupuncture of Chinese. In acupressure, some points on the body are stimulated by pressure of finger for the treatment of physical or psychological problem and headache. By using reiki healing and acupressure (deep finger pressure at certain points), a practitioner try to render mental liberalization, body relaxation, increase blood circulation in affected area consequently enhance tension, pain, headache, migraine headache, stress etc. Both of these therapies function differently on body. The reiki at one hand is effective in yielding psychological relaxation and wellbeing, the acupressure on the other side deals with all aspects of physical, biological and emotional relaxation. …
