Mlva Typing of Acinetobacter Baumannii as a Multidrug-Resistant Organism, Isolated from Tehran Hospitals

Article excerpt

Background: Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as an im- portant nosocomial pathogen, with ability to acquire antibi- otic resistance genes. The aim of this study was to character- ize the resistance mechanisms and genetic relatedness of MDR Acinetobacter baumannii isolates collected in Tehran hos- pitals.

Methods: The resistance phenotypes and genomic diversity of 123 Acinetobacter baumannii isolates obtained from 2 hospi- tals in Tehran from 2009 to2010 were determined using an- timicrobial susceptibility testing and multilocus variable number tandem repeat (MLVA).

Results: Antibiogram analyses showed that the isolates were fully resistant to b-lactam antimicrobials and had high re- sistance rates to the other antimicrobial agents tested. 30 iso- lates (24.4%) were found to be MDR isolates. All MDR A. baumannii isolates were resistant to imipenem (MIC≥ 16 mg/L) and 29(96.7%) of them were resistant to Meropenem. …
