The Pattern of Resistance in Enterococci Isolated from Nosocomial Infections in Hospitals Gonbad and Gorgan Cities

Background: Enterococci are normal flora of human body parts. They are known as the second leading cause of noso- comial infections. The purpose of this study was to deter- mine the drug resistance of Enterococcus species through bio- chemical methods.

Methods: 128 samples were Enterococcus suspected. They were isolated from April to June 2012 in hospitals of Gorgan and Gonbad. Samples were cultured on the blood agar chrome-agar and EMB agar. Suspensions of bacteria were grown in Mueller Hinton agar mediumand. The antibiotic susceptibility was determined by disk inhibition zone diame- ter.

Results: From 128 cases, 109 cases (85/15%) were Enterococ- cus faecalis and 19 (14/85%) were Enterococcus faecium. Isolates of Enterococcus faecalis showed resistance to amoxicillin, 6 (5/5%), ampicillin 7 (6/4%), gentamicin 4 (3/66%), ciprof- loxacin 3 (2/75%), chloramphenicol 4 (3/66%), cephalexin 3 (2/75%) and vancomycin 8 (7/34%), respectively. …
