Detection of Blashv-1 Gene in Escherichia Coli and Klebsiella Spp. Isolates in Rasht Hospitals

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of blaSHV-1 gene in E. coli and Klebsiella strains isolated from hospitalized patients in Rasht, Iran.

Methods: A total of 246 clinical isolates of Escherichia coli and 82 Klebsiella spp. were isolated from clinical specimens (urine, blood, wound and etc.) of hospitalized patients from Rasht hospitals, during eight months. The antibiotic susceptibility test (Kirby-Bauer method) was performed according to CLSI standards against 20 antibiotics. Moreover, all isolated bacte- ria were screened for ESBL production by combined disk diffusion method. PCR was performed to detect blaSHV-1 gene in ESBL positive isolates. PCR products were con- firmed by sequencing. Data were analyzed by SPSS ver 21.

Results: Among 246 E. coli and 82 Klebsiella isolates, 95 (38.6%) and 34 (41.5%) strains were ESBL producers, re- spectively.
