THE PREVALENCE OF TEM GENE AMONG EXTENDED- SPECTRUM BETA-LACTAMASES PRODUCING ESCHERICHIA COLI IN KHORRAM ABAD, Iran

Article excerpt

Background: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) cause many serious infec- tions including urinary tract infections, gastroenteritis, and neonatal meningitis. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of TEM gene among ESBLs Producing E. coli isolated from clinical samples of patients attending to select- ed hospitals in Khorram Abad, Iran.

Methods: In this study, during the one-year period in 2012, 150 strains of E. coli were isolated and identified by routine tests. ESBLs productionwas determined using a combination of clinical phenotype, including disk and disk diffusion agar by CLSI standardized. The prevalence of TEM gene was determined by PCR method.

Results: Among the 150 E. coli, 68 (45.33%) strains produc- ing ESBLs were isolated using phenotypic tests. The fre- quency of TEM gene among the ESBLs producing isolates was 45 (66. …
