Virulence Characteristics of E.coli Isolated from Children with Urinary Tract Infection

Article excerpt

Background: Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is a causative agent in most urinary tract infections (UTIs), ex- pressing a multitude of virulence factors. The aim of this study was to investigate some characteristics in UPEC iso- lates derived from urine specimens.

Methods: A total of 50 E. coli isolates were collected from patients suffering from UTI during September 2009 to Sep- tember 2010.Biochemical and standard microbiological tech- niques were used to identify E. coli and then screened for phylogenetic typing groups, pathogenicity islands, hlyD and intI1 genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Results: We found a high number of PAI markers such as PAI ICFT073, PAI IICFT073, PAI I536, PAI IV536, PAI II J96, and PAI II536 significantly associated with UPEC. PCR phylogenetic typing groups revealing that the higher preva- lence of uropathogenic strains were mainly found in sub- group B2 and D. …
