Evaluation of the Antimicrobial Effect of Lactobacillus Acidophilus Isolated from Probiotic Infant Formula on Escherichia Coli

Article excerpt

Background: Lactic acid bacteria are used as the beneficial bacteria in the production of dairy products. Probiotic dairy products due to their therapeutic effects and special nutri- tional value have been a subject of the extensive research and also there have been so much interest for studying of probi- otic dairy products technologies. The most important aspect of probiotic bacteria is their health effects. Study of the anti- microbial properties of isolated Lactobacillus acidophilus from infant formula performed against E. coli as common gastroin- testinal pathogen agent.

Methods: In this study, 5 samples were collected from com- panies, Nestle probiotic milk (Nan2 and Nan2 H.A) and Milupa probiotic milk (Bebejunior and Bblak). Antimicrobial activities were determined using common bacteria causing gastroenteritis in children (E. coli ATCC 8739) using three microbiological methods, disk diffusion agar, well diffusion agar and agar spot test.

Results: The highest inhibitory effect achieved by well diffu- sion agar with an inhibitory zone diameter of 17. …
