The Frequency of Qnrb among Fluoroquinolone-Resistant Escherichia Coli Strains Isolated from Different Surface Water Sources

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the qnrB associated antibiotic resistance among E. coli strains isolated from surface water sources in Alborz province.

Methods: In this study, we examined all E. coli strains isolat- ed from different surface water sources in Alborz province in 2013. Bacterial isolates were detected and identified by stand- ard microbiological and biochemical tests. To screen the fluoroquinolone-resistant isolates, the antimicrobial suscepti- bility testing was determined according to Kirby Baur assay. Total genomic and plasmid DNA were extracted by boiling method. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was carried out on screened fluoroquinolone-resistant isolates to detect the presence of qnrB genes.

Results: One hundred E. coli strains were isolated and in- cluded. Antibiotic susceptibility testing showed that 22.44 and 7.14 percentages of the isolates were resistant to Nalidix- ic acid and Ciprofloxacin. qnrB gene was detected in 10 fluo- roquinolone-resistant isolates. The remained fluoroquino- lone-resistant isolates and all fluoroquinolone-susceptible isolates didn't contain qnrB gene. …
