Background: This descriptive study was carried out to con- firm that Periplaneta americana L. (Dictyoptera; Blattidae) carry pathogenic and potentially pathogenic bacteria in resi- dential areas by bacteriological analysis on the cuticles of this insect.

Methods: In this research, we caught 25 American cock- roaches from human dwelling localities of Ahvaz County in 2008-2009. Cockroaches were collected using sticky traps, vacuum cleaner and direct collection. The collected cock- roaches were brought to the laboratory. Captured cockroach- es were identified as P. americana. They were examined for the presence of bacteria in their external surfaces using spe- cific standard methods for bacterial infection.

Results: Twenty- five American cockroaches were randomly selected and were detected by bacteriological examination. Medically important bacteria were isolated from external sur- face of 100% of cockroaches. This finding suggests that al- most all the cockroaches in the residential environments car- ry medically important pathogenic bacteria. …
