The Genetic Diversity of Escherichia Coli Strains Isolated from Different Water Sources in Alborz Province

Background: E. coli is one of the most common causes of water borne infectious disease. The study of genetic relation- ships is an important issue between bacterial strains particu- larly those are spreading via water. The aim of this study was to apply ERIC-PCR method for molecular typing of E. coli strains isolated from different surface water sources in Al- borz province.

Methods: This study was performed in the year 2013 on the E. coli isolated from surface waters such as springs, refinery inputs, and a number of wells. Bacterial isolation and identifi- cation were performed using standard microbiological meth- ods. The genetic relationship between the strains was investi- gated by ERIC-PCR using specific primers.

Results: The results showed that the ERIC-PCR was able to generate 10-17 amplified DNA bands. All strains were typ- able when subjected to ERIC PCR. The technique differenti- ated all strains to more than 9 ERIC clusters.
