Analysis of a Heavy Metal Extraction by Native Bacteria

Background: AcidithioBacillus thiooxidans is a sulfur- oxidizing bacterium that used in industrial process of bi- oleaching. Bioleaching is the extraction of metals from their ores through the use of living organisms. This processes are commonly more eco-friendly than physico-chemical process- es. So, in the present study, native AcidithioBacillus thiooxi- dans used for uranium extraction.

Methods: Bioleaching experiment carried out in 250 ml flask containing 90 ml APH medium, 5% uranium ore powder and 10% native AcidithioBacillus thiooxidans. APH medium con- taining 2 g (NH4)2SO4, 0.5 g K2HPO4, 0.5 g MgSO4.7H2O, 0.1 g KCl, 0.01 g Ca(NO3)2.4H2O, 10 g S and 1000 ml of distilled water. pH was adjusted to 4 with H2SO4 (10N). Then, the flask was maintained in a shaker incubator at 150rpm and 35°C. In following, the soluble ex- tracted uranium, variation of pH and Eh measured daily. …
