Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Green Tea Extract on Bacteria Isolated from Dental Plaque

Article excerpt

Background: Green tea is one important factors to inhibi- tion of growth of oral bacteria like Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis. This study investigates the antibacterial effect of green tea extract,on Enterococcus faecalis and Strepto- coccus mutans of dental plaques.

Methods: After obtained of samples, entered in transport medium(TSB) and were transported to the microbiology la- boratory of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Scienc- es.The samples were cultured in blood agar medium,Mitis salivarius agar, bile esculin agar and were incubated in proxim- ity of Co2(5-10%) at 37 ° C for 48 hours. After observing the colonies, the slides were prepared and then they stained with Gram's method. Then to ensure the authentication and identi- fication of microorganisms, common microbial and chemical tests were used. After determining the type of bacte- ria, antibiogram test was done to determine bacterial sensitivi- ty and resistance to green tea, sodium hypochlorite and chlor- hexidine by Disc Diffiusion Agar according to CLSI guide- lines.

Results: In Streptococcus mutans, diameter of growth inhab- itation of green tea was not so different from chlorhexi- dine(p=0. …
