Dealing with Learning Disabilities among Children with Chronic Disease

There is a correlation between children's health condition, the existence of chronic disease and the cognitive and academic potential. It was observed for many years that different chronic health conditions predispose children to different kinds of neuro-cognitive impairments, including - lower cognitive level, learning disabilities, behavioral difficulties and ADHD.

But, the characteristics of impaired performance or ability secondary to poor health are commonly not understood. In order to prevent, correctly diagnose and improve cognitive performance among children with chronic disease there is a need to clarify and quantify the relationship between chronic health conditions and children cognitive performance and ability.

This presentation summarizes what is known through published research about the association of academic outcome, cognitive performance, learning and attention abilities with chronic health conditions such as seizure disorders, asthma, chronic heart disease, chronic pain, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. …
