The Role of a Psychologist in Dilemmas of Parental Care for Sick and Healthy Children in the Family

A universal and fundamental challenge parents face is the distribution of their attention and resources among their children. This challenge is accentuated when one of the children requires more care and attention than the other siblings. Such differential demands are common when parents deal with a sick or very needy child together with healthy children is "complex parenting". There is limited capacity for increasing the family's resources.

Some parents strive towards maintaining equality among all children, thus, inadvertently under-caring for the sick child. Others dedicate themselves to the sick child at the expense of a certain neglect of the healthy siblings, which may cause resentment among them. We shall discuss damage resulting from extreme preference for the sick/disabled child and damage resulting from extreme preference for the healthy siblings. …
