Safecare: Long-Term Significant Outcomes in Preventing Child Maltreatment

Presented here will be the history and research behind SafeCare, an evidence-based practice aimed at prevention of and intervention in child maltreatment. This home visiting parent training, train-the-trainer models comprised of skills training modules in parent-child interactions, home safety, and child health care skills taught to home visitors who in turn teach parents the skills. The home visitors are also taught to use structured problem-solving skills in working with families either at-risk for child maltreatment or referred for child maltreatment. Currently, SafeCare is implemented in 14 US states and two other nations. Each intervention module will be described, as will data showing the importance of ongoing coaching of home visitors for maintenance of fidelity to the model and effective outcomes. …
