Caring Dispositions and Positive Youth Development: Relevance to Service Leadership in University Students

People are willing to follow a leader until they know how much a leader cares about them, provides opportunities to nurture them and empowers them to lead themselves. Service is composed of listening, caring and understanding that are valued in today's human relationship oriented society. Successful leaders are perceived as caring when they attempt to understand and willing to connect with others. Young people are considered as change agents for society. One of the important goals of higher education is to foster the development of students to become caring and passionate leaders after graduation. Unfortunately, there are few programs developed specifically to promote caring dispositions in university students in the Chinese contexts.

Conceptually, this paper provides an overview of the concepts of care and caring dispositions based on the positive youth development paradigm. …
