Empowerment of the Child with Chronic Disability: My Personal Experience

When young parents are suddenly faced with an unexpected overwhelming challenge in the form of a child who is either born with or develops a severe disability, the family unit is shaken to its core. The parental recovery and response to such a challenge will to a large measure determine the future health not only of the child with the disability but also of the siblings, as well as the relationship between husband and wife and thus the viability of the family.

Clearly the focus of all health care will be geared towards empowering the child with the disability, but thought and attention must be given toward empowering the entire family unit in order to realize maximum goals, both for the sake of the child and for the sake of other family members.

This presentation will share perspectives on this dynamic from the vantage point of a father who has experienced it first hand, when his eleven month old healthy son became blind and deaf following a routine vaccination in Israel in 1977. …
