Promotion of Holistic Development of University Students in Hong Kong: Development of a Service Leadership Course

In a post-industrial era in which service industries flourish, how can we promote the holistic development of university students? What competencies and qualities should graduates have so that they can thrive and develop better? These are important questions for health providers, educators, university teachers and public health researchers to consider.

There are several parts in this paper. First, developmental needs and issues in university students in Hong Kong are presented. Second, the need for service leadership in Hong Kong is examined. Third, the theoretical foundation of service leadership development model, including the cultivation of leadership qualities, character and care, is outlined. Finally, a credit-bearing subject on Service Leadership to be offered at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University will be presented.

The following topics are covered in the proposed course: a) concepts related to service leadership, including the nature and rationales of service leadership; b) service leadership as a function of leadership competencies, moral character and care (leadership = MC2); c) basic leadership competencies, including IQ, EQ, AQ, SQ and interpersonal competencies; d) character strengths and service leadership; e) character strengths in Chinese philosophies and relevance of Confucian virtues to service leadership; f) caring disposition and service leadership; g) factors leading to the creation, development and maintenance of positive social relationships; h) self-leadership; i) developmental assets and service leadership; and j) leaders as mentors. …
