Breastfeeding Duration and Maternal Sleep Expectations: Comparison of Full and Partial Rooming-In Post-Partum Units

Article excerpt

Our medical center offers two post-partum types of units: partial and full rooming-in. This study examined sleep expectations and patterns of postpartum women in full rooming-in vs. partial roomingin and the relationship between women's sleep patterns and newborns' short- and long-term breastfeeding patterns in full rooming-in vs. partial rooming-in.

Methods: A longitudinal study of a convenience sample of 108 post-partum women. We examined women's expectations and actual sleep patterns in the hospital and assessed lactation in the hospital and 3-4 months post-discharge.

Results: There was a significant relationship between sleep expectations following birth and the number of hours women actually slept in the hospital (Spearman's rho=0.283, p= 0.006) regardless of type of unit (full or partial rooming in). When examining differences in sleep duration and patterns between types of units, we found that women in full roomingin sleep significantly more in 24 hours (8.1±2.64 vs. 7.06±1.97 hours), yet in full rooming-in, women slept more of those hours during the day (p<0.001) while in partial rooming-in women slept significantly more hours during the night (P=0.007). While the number of breastfeeds during hospitalization was not significantly different between the two types of units, women who were hospitalized in full rooming-in were significantly more likely to breastfeed at 3-4 months following discharge (p=0. …
