The Rightful Life: Down Syndrome as a Paradigm

Newborn babies with Down syndrome (DS) can be expected to be healthier and live a longer and more meaningful life than ever before. Although there are increasing resources, both governmental and academic, that are being directed towards enhancing the capabilities and maximizing the accomplishments of individuals with DS, the major thrust of public health interventions is still aimed towards prevention of birth of DS children. Recent surveys indicate that the incidence of DS has not been reduced despite these programs suggesting that the target audience has a different perspective regarding parenting a child with DS.

Parents have the right to make a knowledgeable decision regarding pregnancy screening, invasive diagnostic tests, and decisions regarding continuation of pregnancy or termination. However the impact of these tests on the safety and wellbeing of the fetuses and the parents are a crucial element that is not always taken fully into consideration. …
