Growing Up with Cystic Fibrosis and Its Challenges in Adulthood

Background: Advances in cystic fibrosis (CF) treatment over the last decades have brought about to increased life expectancy of people with CF from 20- 30 years to 40 or more. The illness that was once considered a childhood illness is now considered to be a chronic illness. The presented research examines the influence of childhood experiences of individuals with CF on their illness perception, self-perception and coping as adults.

Methods: A multi-center research using a mixedmethods design was employed. At this stage, 36 participants treated at Hadassah Mt Scopus CF clinic completed questionnaires and participated in an openended interview with a social worker. Participants included three groups: married adults with CF, their spouses, and matched single adults with CF. This presentation is based on the qualitative interviews in which participants were asked to tell about their life with CF, their sources of support and coping methods. The interviews were recorded and transcribed to facilitate qualitative analysis of the text.

Findings: Participants described various challenges they face due to the symptoms of the disease, the treatment routine and the effect the illness has on fertility. …
