May 7: The Hamas-led government in the Gaza Strip lifted a ban on several Palestinian publications produced outside of its territory. The move was an attempt to foster greater measures of cooperation between Hamas and Fatah, further bolstered by Hamas's release of six imprisoned Fatah supporters on May 5. [Reuters, 5/7]

June 2: Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmud 'Abbas swore in the newly unified technocratic government of Fatah and Hamas in Ramallah after a seven- year-long rift between the two groups. The ceremony was the culmination of the April unity pact forged to promote the two groups' unity and reconciliation. The United States agreed to work with the unified government but expressed caution over its explicit ties with Hamas, while Israel refused to conduct future negotiations with the new government.
