May 6: Authorities arrested 62 members of an alleged terrorist cell suspected of plotting attacks against the government and foreign institutions in Riyadh. Among those detained were 35 Saudis, who had previously been arrested on various charges, and three foreigners. Saudi intelligence said that the group had links to other terrorist networks in Syria and Yemen. [DS, 5/6]

May 14: King 'Abdullah appointed his son, Prince Turki bin 'Abdullah, as the governor of Riyadh Province. His appointment to the position, considered one of the most important to be held by a member of the royal family, strengthened 'Abdullah's branch of the mling family as the Kingdom prepared to transition to a new monarch. The move was seen as part of a larger deal between different branches of the family. [Reuters, 5/14]
