I have been inundated lately

with three-hour slide shows and pie charts

about SLOs (Student Learning Objectives).

I think it's unfair of the policy wonks to co-opt slow

into SLO

in such an unfortunate (not to mention horribly ironic)

act of acronyming.

So I want to tell you my ideas about slow,

and in the process I hope to rehabilitate

the perfectly good word they have so cruelly pilfered.

My kind of slow is petting the velvet ears

of a white-faced dog

who has curled into a golden crescent roll

in the shade beside my chair.

My kind of slow is a fire pit burning low, embers dying

along with the party, neighbors still

reluctant to go.

My kind of slow is watching whales breach,

their backs glistening while the beer grows warm

and the evening chill. …
