NAGT Eastern Section 2002 Distinguished Service Award: Robert K. Ridky-Presented by William R. Brice and Brian Tormey

This award, created by the Eastern Section/NAGT in 1999, is a way for the Section to recognize the outstanding contributions of our members. For 2002 we are pleased to present the award to Robert K. Ridky, Professor, University of Maryland. For many years Bob has been at the forefront of geological education through his participation in all the major earth science education projects in which NAGT has participated, starting with ESOP and CREEP. How many of us are old enough to remember these? From 1980 to 1982, Bob was chairman of the NAGT Laboratory Manual Committee, and we all know of the success of this project. And, as we heard from the Keynote speaker at the annual meeting, Bob is directly involved with the current NAGT/AGI earth science education project.

Bob has served our Section as both President (1978-79) and Vice President (1977-1978) and almost at the same time(1978-1980), he was Vice President and President of our national organization. In addition to his work with NAGT, Bob was chair of the Education Division of the Geological Society of America 1994-1995. He has served as a member of numerous educational committees, e.g., Maryland Board of Education Science Review Committee, AGI Education Committee and Steering Committee, National Science Education Standards Committee (National Academy of Science/National Research Council), and many others.
