Spirit the First's mouth is a violet-

pentagram, petal and drawstring.

She kisses my head and the sound caves in.

I'm deaf to everything but the banter

broken bone flowers lisp aloud in moonlife.

The goat ghost unravels her night kerchiefs

from tobacco pockets-embroidered

with sinews, crocheted crow shade, her breath

the aftermath of the dark the dead bark,

horns and hornets in her bestial braids.

When she wipes my tears, my eyelids

dissolve and the sky comes through,

gros point of stars, the Southern Cross,

constellation Andromeda under my cough.

The final phantom is three feet tall.

Instead of heartbeats, bells in the chest,

slither of river. Breathless and breastless,

she's leper, town crier, carillon

reaper, wind chime bellwether. …
