Gilte Legende, Volume III, ed. Richard Hamer, with the assistance of Vida Russell, Early English Text Society Original Series 339 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012). xii + 618 pp. ISBN 978-0-19-966817-5. £60.00. Richard Hamer and Vida Russell here present the third volume which completes their edition of the mid-fifteenth-century Gilte Legende. The first two volumes, published in 2006 and 2007 (EETS, os 327 and 328), contained the edited text, comprising a full year's cycle of saints' lives and other festivals. This eagerly awaited third volume presents all the important supporting matter: introduction, notes, glossary, index of proper names, bibliography; some corrigenda for the previous volumes are also offered. In fact, the bulk of this final volume, some 444 pages, is taken up with the notes on the text, which concentrate on documenting how the English translation diverges from its French and Latin predecessors (the Gilte Legendeis a close English rendering of Jean de Vignay's Légende dorée, itself a translation of the Legenda au rea of Jacobus de Voraginé). There is a storehouse of information here for linguistic scholars since the text's vocabulary contains numerous items unrecorded by the Middle English Dictionary. A brief analysis of the translator's practice is offered in the introduction, where the editors speculate that the translator may have been a woman, positing Eleanor Hull as a plausible candidate. …
