Consisting of books whose texts and (when illustrated) images were cut and printed from blocks, rather than being produced with moveable type, they long were thought in part to pre-date Gutenberg's invention of printing with moveable type. Just, however, as our picture of Gutenberg has changed radically over the past fifty years, so too has that of blockbooks. In each case, the application of new technologies to the analysis of paper and ink as well as the creation of systematic databases and surveys has revolutionized our understanding of book manufacture, patronage, distribution, and readership over the course of the fifteenth century. Given that we live in a period of transformations no less revolutionary, studies of the technology of early printing that themselves are rooted in technological innovation as well as scholarly imagination represent a fundamental contribution to knowledge. The studies in this superb volume represent an ideal integration of innovative and imaginative approaches. Under the aegis of Bettina Wagner, one of the leading scholars of fifteenth-century printing, and in conjunction with a project that both catalogued and digitized the collection of blockbooks in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München, one of the largest of its kind, scholars gathered to present the papers published here. …
