On Saturday, April 26, the VHS held its annual meeting and garden party. A highlight of the meeting was the announcement of awards given to seven individuals for outstanding achievement in scholarship, teaching, and service to the VHS. Floyd D. Gottwald, Jr., of Richmond received the Society's newest prize, the Lora Robins Award for leadership, generosity, and foresight in collecting the evidence of Virginia's history. The other award recipients were: Richard Gillespie (pictured far left), Loudoun Valley High School, Purcellville, winner of the Brenton S. Halsey Teaching Award; Ann Field Alexander (third from left), of Mary Baldwin College, winner of the Richard Slatten Award for Excellence in Virginia Biography for her book, Race Man: The Rise and Fall of the "Fighting Editor," John Mitchell, Jr. (University of Virginia Press, 2002); Joanne Brooks (fifth from left) of the VHS library, winner of the Volunteer of the Year Award; Jessica Zappia, Maggie L.
