The 1995 World Hypertension League (WHL) Ottawa Declaration1 issued by the World Conference on Hypertension Control called for several actions to prevent the onset of elevated blood pressure in the population. One of the important recommendations was to facilitate patient's adherence to the advice (both drug therapy and lifestyle/behaviour modification) of health care providers. The Canadian Coalition for High Blood Pressure Prevention and Control decided to meet this challenge. It undertook a project to evaluate the available evidence and public health information and to arrive at practical recommendations for health care providers, patients and the public. The Coalition assembled a panel of experts* from different disciplines of the health care field and arrived at the recommendations which are practical and useful. The panel - Advisory Committee on Adherence to the Management of High Blood Pressure - is grateful to Dr. David Sackett and Dr. Brian Haynes for their significant input during panel discussion. On behalf of the Coalition, I extend my sincere appreciation to all members of the Advisory Committee for their diligent work in preparing the recommendations.
