Evidence Based Macro Practice in Social Work, by Murali D. Nair and Erick G. Guerrero, is intended to prepare students to understand the role of social workers at the macro level and to present scientific and theoretical understanding of macro-level practice. The text is organized in seven sections, with twenty-nine chapters. The authors state, "It is the premise of this book that by having an awareness and appreciation of the forces that affect our clients and our work, we can be more effective professionals." Section 1 presents the conceptual framework of macro practice, including the evolution of macro practice, theoretical underpinnings, models of practice, and an overview of evidence-based macro practice. Section 2 deals with human service organizations in the context of the larger social service delivery system, and section 3 concerns social work administration. Section 4 provides an overview of strategic planning, action planning, and setting achievable goals and objectives. In section 5 the authors provide an overview of macro practice skills essential for social work practice, and in section 6 they address issues and approaches to community organizing. Section 7 focuses on a global perspective in macro social work. The final section presents problem-solving case studies in macro practice. Each chapter includes a final section that summarizes the materials presented in the chapter and then provides several questions for discussion.

For example, a few brief paragraphs at the beginning of chapter 1 on the great civilizations of the world and the creativity that has emerged from community participation set the stage to fulfill the promise of the chapter's title, "Evolution of Macro Practice: A Quest for Human Spirit," but the section concludes before being fully developed. …
