For most of his career as a writer, Roth made his living as a journalist. Writing for a range of publications, his work for the Frankfurter Zeitung between 1923 and 1932 in particular, contributing to the paper's Feuilleton from Berlin, brought him considerable acclaim and a comfortable income. Among his many articles were no fewer than 99 on film, cinema, and the film industry, published betweenl919 and 1936. As the editors explain in their informative Nachwort, Roth's attitude underwent a dramatic change in the meantime. In the immediate post-war period, Roth was an avid proponent of film and not only wrote film reviews but also took a serious interest in literature on film as a medium and its potential. By the time he had established himself as a serious journalist in the 1920s this interest had waned and the editors suggest that his articles on film really were written just for the money. By the time Roth wrote his Antichrist (1934), he had come to see film as one of the more significant scourges of the twentieth century. Now he referred to Hollywood as "Hölle-Wut," a place where "die Menschen die Doppelgänger ihrer eigenen Schatten sind" (cited 378). "Die lebendigen Mädchen und Knaben in der ganzen Welt, die diese Schatten sehen," Roth explained, "nehmen den Gang, das Antlitz, die Gestalt und die Haltung dieser Schatten an. Daher kommt es, daß man manchmal Männer und Frauen, lebendige Menschen in den Straßen trifft, die nicht selbst Doppelgänger ihrer Schatten sind wie die Schauspieler des Kinos, sondern noch weniger: nämlich die Doppelgänger fremder Schatten" (cited 380). …
