As Brigitte Spreitzer herself points out in her detailed and thoughtful introduction to this collection of Anna Freud's literary output (mainly poems), one might well initially question the merits of publishing these texts, given how intensely private Anna Freud notoriously was. After all, the texts in question were nearly all written between 1914 and 1924, most of them in the period between 1919 and 1921, and Anna Freud chose not to publish them and was evidently no longer seriously invested in writing poetry after 1925 at the latest. On the other hand, her interest in writing poetry was, as Spreitzer goes on to show very effectively, not only a major preoccupation for Anna Freud herselfbut also ofgreat interest and concern to her father, and it features prominently in Anna Freud's correspondence with Lou Andreas- Salomé. Moreover, Spreitzer also offers an interesting reading of Anna Freud's literary output that interprets it as indicative of the struggles of young (Jewish) women of her class and generation who aspired to education and possibly a professional role in Ufe. …
