Editorial Perspective: State of the Journal

As I enter the last year of my appointment as Executive Editor, I am reflecting about the changes that have taken place as well as continuing needs of the Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory, and Research (JPC). The JPC has undergone two significant transitions in the past few years, both of which involved movement to a new submission system. The first transition was especially difficult, as it involved our first completely on-line submission and review process. The system used was not especially designed for manuscripts and journals. While the staff and editors worked diligently to deal with and correct problems as they arose, the speed with which the editors and reviewers could work and the basic unfriendliness of the system for journal production ultimately led to the move to a new system.

This second move, effective January 2014, was much easier. The JPC now uses a system that is designed for handling manuscripts and was quickly adapted by TCA staff to meet the needs of the JPC. It is an intuitive system that allows the editors to track the entire process of any given manuscript on one screen. …
