Aug. 5: The Israeli government reported the completion of the main objective of Operation Protective Edge: the destruction of Palestinian militants' cross-border tunnels. In total, 32 cross-border tunnels were destroyed. The objective was completed before the start of an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire. [BBC, Reuters, 8/5]

Israeli court documents, revealing the July 11 arrest of Husam Qawasimi, a Palestinian with suspected involvement in the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank in June, was made public. According to the documents, Hamas financed the kidnapping. Two other Palestinians, Marwan Qawasimi and 'Ammar Abu 'Aysha, were also implicated in the attack. [Reuters, NYT, 8/5]

Aug. 14: Nearly 10,000 Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv to protest the most recent Israeli offensive in Gaza and its failure to end Palestinian rocket and mortar fire aimed at southern border towns. Despite the renewal of a five-day cease-fire the day before, protesters feared the resumption of hostilities and pressed Israeli officials to destroy Hamas rocket arsenals in Gaza. The demonstration was the largest of those criticizing the Israeli government since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge. [Reuters, 8/14]

Aug. 17: Israeli police were deployed in the town of Rishon Lezion to block 200 Israeli protesters, led by the far-right group Lehava, from rushing attendees at the wedding of a Jewish woman and a Muslim man. While the group has protested Jewish-Muslim intermarriage in the past, Lehava was rarely active at wedding ceremonies. …
