I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Michael Simonson and Charles Schlosser for extending the opportunity for me to serve as guest editor for this special issue of the Quarterly Review of Distance Education with a focus on online faculty.

John Curry and Jonene Cook start off this issue by sharing how both new and experienced online faculty can facilitate online discussions and promote deeper interaction through the use of the MANIC discussion technique. Thomas Tobin then offers specific strategies that online faculty can utilize to incorporate principles of universal course design for learning in order to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners. Next, Larry Bohn and I report on our research project to describe the current state of assessment of online instructor quality and identify observable quantitative indicators of quality based on the actions of online instructors in their courses. Finally, Christopher Miller and John Curry take us on a journey through the development and implementation of Morehead State University's successful online practitionerbased doctoral program.
