Seventeen Beethoven scholars contributed essays for the latest volume of the Beethoven-Handbuch series. The longest section is devoted to the opera Leonore and its transformation into Fidelio, with historical background provided by Helga Lühningand Arnold Jacobshagen. Glenn Stanley draws on performance reviews and descriptions of productions illustrated with a few black-and-white illustrations to explore reception of the opera in Germany and Austria. The remaining chapters oscillate between summaries of Beethoven's works in specific genres and contextual essays. Following Egon Voss's contribution on Beethovens theater and ballet music, Pia Janke explores Beethoven's involvement with Vienna's theaters, including the Hoftheater and the theaters located in the Vorstadt, and his unrealized plans for theatrical compositions. The oratorio Christus am Ölberge-a work closely associated with Beethoven's Heiligenstadt Testament-receives focused attention by Joanna Cobb Biermann. After providing context on Beethoven's church music, Wolfgang Rathert looks more closely at the two Masses, Opuses 86 and 123, summarizing the genesis, performance and reception history, structure, and aspects of interpretation of the works. A short digression by Maynard Solomon on Beethoven's search for faith draws on biographical sources (letters, diary, notations in music manuscripts and other documents) as well other works with religious texts, such the Geliert Lieder. …
