New Ebola Vaccine Trial Is Underway

Scientists at the Oxford Vaccine Group have commenced the first safety trial of their experimental Ebola vaccine, being developed by the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. This is not the only Ebola vaccine currently being tested, with others also in development by other companies - but experts state that this is not a competition and can only be good as it increases the likelihood that mass immunisation would be possible and successful, if required in the future.

The Oxford Vaccine Group is testing their vaccine on 72 healthy adult volunteers aged 18-50 years, who received their first dose in January. The study aims to understand the safety of the vaccine and hopes to be successful: the development of the vaccine was accelerated in response to the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa. An effective vaccine would be an important step in controlling the spread and impact of the disease in the future. …
