The Deputy Prime Minister has announced plans for a new mental health taskforce made up of Cabinet ministers from across the coalition government, including the Secretary of State for Health and ministers from education, health and defence.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg commented, 'Far too long mental health has been in the shadows, and many people have suffered in silence as a result. The whole of government needs to combine its efforts and pool its resources to help the millions of people whose mental health condition is preventing them from getting on in life.'

Recent figures show that one in four people in the United Kingdom will experience a mental health problem each year, and 2.3 million people with a mental health condition are out of work. A recent major report from Mind, the mental health charity, called for more intensive support in this area after finding that 46% of people claiming Employment and Support Allowance are suffering with mental health conditions. …
