This issue's contributions foreground the intriguing performative relationships between an eclectic collection of "texts" and "performances." The issue's two plays insist upon minimal staging. In contrast, Rana Salimi and Laura Zingle's discussions of two seemingly straightforward productions of well-known plays, reveal how design, acting, and staging (and for El Henry, textual adaptation) can provide an interpretive context clear to local spectators. Daniel Sack discusses productions by Romeo Castellucci responding to two European classics "in which the word plays a subsidiary role to a cataclysm of appearance and disappearance." Helen Shaw considers how pieces of three texts-in this case, films-to which Big Dance Theater's Alan Smithee Directed this Play responds are actually present in the performance as projections that play in proximity to each other and to the "performed palimpsest" developed by the company in lieu of interpretation. …
