The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have ushered in an era of change for most school districts in the United States. With the adoption of new standards comes the need for guidance in understanding, planning, and implementing instruction that is aligned with the CCSS. There are no individuals in a better position to provide this support than literacy coaches, reading specialists, and curriculum leaders, all of whom work closely and consistently with classroom teachers. In their newly published book, Elish-Piper and L'Allier (2014) provide literacy leaders a practical and comprehensive guide that gently scaffolds any individual charged with the task of helping others to understand, plan, and integrate the English-Language Arts Common Core standards into a K-5 classroom or school.

Elish-Piper and L'Allier's book begins with a concise understanding of the purpose of coaching and how it can be most effective in a 21st century educational environment. The book is then divided up into three sections. These sections focus on large group, small group, and individual coaching toward the Common Core. Within each of these sections, the authors carefully describe a host of pragmatic strategies, all of which work toward the goal of meeting the needs of teachers working within a Common Core framework.
