Her damp stabbing fragrance clings fast

To the breeze, creeping like an ox cart 'round

Obstructions of crumbling quarry stone

Casting shadows on frozen ground.

Its waters in darkened valleys and corners

Bring forth sustenance for life,

And color golden tapestries of faded shades

'Neath fields of cataclysmic strife.

A flowing monument and devil to humanity

Ripping back optimism with cold steel

Needling nails and bleeding hope and warmth

From bodies whom before her kneel.

Her symphony of disillusionment

Runs below her shallow flow

Pulling dreams of better days to drown

Beneath its vicious undertow.

But like a killer found guilty of callous crime

Prosecuted by its prey,

The mighty Shannon slips her deathly noose,

And silently lurks away. …
