"Book Censorship in France"

Simone de Beauvoir's adopted daughter okayed the text of a book about her mother and Jean-Paul Sartre. Sartre's did not: she wanted all quotations from unpublished material and paraphrases vetted, expunged. It is always disheartening when an executor controls research and publication but especially in this case because both Sartre and de Beauvoir refused to censor themselves and thus maintained all of their papers for posterity. But apparently not for readers.
