Public Health Experts Call for Strengthened Public Health in Canada

Leading health system and public health experts from across Canada are calling for strong leadership, accountability and coordination for the public health system in Canada. They also cite expanded human resources, modern information systems, more equitable funding arrangements across Canada, and better access to technical expertise as urgently needed.

Organized by Dr. John Frank, Scientific Director of the Institute of Population and Public Health of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and held in Calgary on the eve of CPHA's 94th Annual Conference, a national forum brought together 60 thinkers in public health and health care systems to craft a roadmap of immediate and long-term actions required to deal not only with emerging infectious diseases such as SARS, but also emerging and long-term health problems, such as overweight, and inequalities in health between and within Provinces and Territories.

A key recommendation of the forum is the establishment of a Canadian public health institution to provide strategic leadership and the diverse technical expertise required for disease prevention, health promotion and health protection. …
