Life Expectancy

Article excerpt

Twenty years ago that perfect body

Came swimming out of her

Now time is suspended

He is not dead but not alive

Doctors come and go

Their godly pronouncements

Testing a mother's hope

She can't speak or eat

She is just sitting by his bed

In a room riddled with ghosts.

She is calling him back from the coma

When others might have let him fall

She is whispering in his ear

Rest now my precious son

You are safe, I will not let you go

It is not your time

Feel the earth and the sky cradling you

I love you to the moon and back.

She is bringing him home

To a house full of echoes

She tries leading him out of the darkness

That is swallowing his memories

But he wants back

The life he had before

A place, a time gone.

She is shadowing his steps

Pushing him to take more

But the sadness of what he should have been

Is slithering around her days

Poisoning every happiness,

Perhaps she should have let him go

Perhaps she should go

Perhaps they could go together. …
