Being Open, Being Faithful: The Journey of Interreligious Dialogue. By Douglas Pratt. (Geneva: World Council of Churches Publications, 2014. Pp. xx, 193. $18.00.)

What does Christian identity mean in the face of religious pluralism? This central question related to Christian participation in interreligious dialogue is at the core of this new book by Douglas Pratt. Pratt, an Anglican priest from New Zealand active in interreligious circles with a wealth of experience, an academic appointment at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and visiting professorships in Birmingham, Oxford, Heidelberg, Rome, Washington D.C., and the International Islamic University in Malaysia. Given this rich background, Pratt is able to pack a great deal into this relatively slim volume; including a thorough history of interreligious dialogue; a discussion of the relationship between Christian identity and discipleship; an overview of models of interreligious dialogue; and, a helpful section on interreligious prayer and action.

This book is not really a manual, although it should certainly prove useful to that audience. Rather, Being Open, Being Faithful is resource which addresses theologically many of the core issues related to Christian engagement in a multi-religious world.

Theologically (and biblically) speaking, why should Christians engage with persons of other religious traditions? What are the benefits and challenges of Christian interreligious engagement? If indeed interreligious engagement in some way changes us, what does that mean for the shape of Christian identity? What does Christian interreligious engagement mean for discipleship? The reader is invited to reflect on all these questions and more within the scope of the book. Pratt's style is itself dialogical and invitation He provides a great deal of context and background, yet at the same time he leaves space for the reader to address these questions for themselves. …
