The space aliens who took over my future

encircle the table, manifest as bodies

like the angeli in Lippi's painting

bringing the bambino to the Madonna

who, if you reflect on her intense gaze

that must be focused inwardly, sees them not,

these harbingers of the yet to be world transformed utterly. But it's not me

who shall give it birth. Nor they, this year's

sophomores in a required seminar

in Renaissance Thought, who may see

their aging professor as no less strange

than Fra Lippi's anachronistic depicting

of everday miracle made extraordinary,

though the space we share begins slowly

from the energy of their minds to fill,

as from the Brownianmovement of molecules:

where had been shadow (and, it seemed, doubt

ineluctable) spirit gathers light of understanding.

Somewhere a Ferlinghetti, perhaps among them

in a further future, but whom for now they know

not is "waiting perpetually for a rebirth of wonder. …
