If you walk through here

On your way somewhere else

You will find your way

Suddenly narrowed

Hemmed around by rows of marble slabs

Pillars Monuments Denkmäler

For the Jews of Europe

Murdered ermordeten

The pillars close in and

The cobbled path slants,

Undulates beneath your feet

Walking, you lose

Sense of where you're going

And the monuments

Denkmäler Remember now

Go on and on, the paths like one another

And the slabs


Crowd in together,

You don't know, walking through here

Where the path could lead.

You suspect there may be

No way out

So many tall and faceless stones

Like prison bars, like headstones

The monument: Denkmal

Remember now: Denk mal. …
