Olympic Auditing a Herculean Effort

How does a group of volunteers ensure quality, foster safety, promote accountability and manage risk for a one-time, internationally promoted event? How does the same group set up parameters for efficiently and professionally assessing and managing the legal, insurance, operational and financial aspects of the event when the volunteer corps changes almost daily? These and many other questions kept Terrance L. McGrane, CIA, CPE, CISA awake nights when he first a greed to coordinate the Volunteer Internal Audit Services for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

As President of the Atlanta Chapter of The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), McGrane is no stranger to auditing challenges. "The Olympics however, present unique opportunities for improving methods, devising streamlined approaches, partnering with management and utilizing the strengths of everyone involved," McGrane said.

He goes on to explain that the Atlanta Summer Games will use over 60,000 volunteers and cost approximately $4 billion. "That's a lot of manpower and a lot of money," McGrane said. "And when it's all said and done, our Audit Services group will have donated approximately 12,000 auditing hours evaluating processes, devising warehouse and transferring procedures, ensuring safety and timeliness, monitoring performance and continually revamping and improving methods."

McGrane reported that in addition to the personal gratification received from donating his expertise and time to a project he believes in, his involvement with the Olympics has produced some unexpected benefits. "We have been able to achieve something auditors everywhere strive for but are often unsuccessful at while working at their regular places of employment," said McGrane. …
