In the conclusion Chris Perriam writes, '[t] his book has set out to map a Spanish queer cinema made up of a network of images, moments and stories of emotional commit- ment, of community affiliation, and of political or artistic intent'. His summary is both concise and accurate. Spanish Queer Cinema traces the developments and patterns in the production and consumption of short and feature- length films made in Spain from 1998 up to 2011. This is a survey that takes 'queer' as the broad church it describes in political and activist circles, that is lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Perriam's intervention allows for a productive identificatory and geographical inclusivity. The Spain that is mapped out in the book takes in the regional differences and understands their specificities.

The book is divided into five sections: queer, legacies, icons, audiences and writers. In each Perriam carefully draws upon and, where necessary, unpicks previous scholarship on queer subjects. He weaves in the political developments in Spain in relation to queer rights and provides numerous examples of films that reflect these.

Integral to the book are artful, careful and thoughtful reflections on the means of consumption, access and viewing that are part of the research process. These arise with discussions on accessing films online and their availability, which can often be temporary, unsustained or contingent on location. …
